Course Overview and Scope

  • A hazard is a situation where there is a threat to life, health, environment or property. These hazards are termed as disasters when they cause widespread destruction of property and human lives. 
  • The world continues to remain at risk due to hazards such as earthquake, flood, landslide and fire. The risk is further increased by the impact of climate change.
  • Identifying the types of disaster and understanding the damages caused by windstorm, flood and landslide and the ways to reduce the impacts of disaster is one of the core concepts in Social Science. 
  • This course will introduce the students to contents related to climatic conditions.
  • In completion of the course, students will be able to meet the objectives and competencies below.

Competency

  • Applies the knowledge and skills of safety measures to minimize the impacts of hazards and disasters.

Objectives.

  • Explain windstorm, flood and landslide.
  • Explain damages caused by windstorm, flood and landslide.
  • Assess the damages caused by disaster.
  • Discuss the measures to minimize the impacts of disaster.
